A month after the side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. Wonder hits Switch, Nintendo will return to the Mushroom Kingdom for Super Mario RPG, a remake of its 1996 cult-favorite collaboration with SquareSoft (now Square Enix).
Mario RPG Remake Release Date and Price:
Super Mario RPG is set to be released on November 17 exclusively for Nintendo Switch, with a price tag of $60 USD.
Mario RPG Remake Trailer 2023:
The official Super Mario RPG remake trailer was revealed alongside the game in June. More recently, Nintendo released an official gameplay trailer showcasing some of the new features.
Mario RPG Gameplay Updates:
While the core gameplay systems of the original Super Mario RPG remain intact, Nintendo has introduced a few enhancements:
- Action Gauge: Successful Action Commands, which involve timed button presses during attack or defense actions, now fill an Action Gauge. Perfectly timed attacks will result in damage being dealt to all enemies.
- Triple Move: When the Action Gauge reaches 100%, players can perform a powerful three-person attack. The specific attack varies based on the combination of characters in the party.
- Boss Rematches: After completing the game, players can go back and face stronger versions of some bosses, provided certain conditions are met.
- Monster List: A Monster List has been added, functioning similarly to a Pokedex, filling up as players engage in battles and providing information on monster status and weaknesses.
- Easy Mode: A new way to play Super Mario RPG, Easy Mode is designed for those looking to progress through the story with minimal difficulty. It doesn’t alter the story and can be adjusted mid-game.
- Original and New Music Options: Players can switch between the original background music and a new soundtrack, both composed by Yoko Shimomura.
Mario RPG Remake Story:
In Super Mario RPG, the Mushroom Kingdom faces an invasion by the Smithy Gang, a group of sentient weapons from another dimension. The game involves collecting star pieces to repair Star Road and expel the Smithy Gang from the kingdom. The playable characters include Mario, Bowser, Peach, Geno, and Mallow.
The remake retains a classic meta joke from the original, featuring the optional boss Culex.
Preorder: The Super Mario RPG remake can be preordered from major online retailers and the Nintendo eShop, though the latter is for a digital copy only. Prices across retailers are set at US$59.99.
How to Play the Original Mario RPG
For those interested in experiencing the original SNES release, it can be played on Super Nintendo with a cartridge or on the SNES Classic Edition. The game was also available on the Wii and Wii U eShops, but those digital storefronts have since closed.
